Interpretive Modeling of Simple-as- Possible-plasma Discharges on Diii–d Using the Oedge Code

چکیده
Recently a number of major, unanticipated effects have been reported in tokamak edge research raising the question of whether we understand the controlling physics of the edge. This report is on the first part – here focused on the outer divertor – of a systematic study of the simplest possible edge plasma – no ELMs, no detachment, etc. – for a set of 10 repeat, highlydiagnosed, single-null, divertor discharges in DIII–D. For almost the entire, extensive data set so far evaluated, the matches of experiment and model are so close as to imply that the controlling processes at the outer divertor for these simple plasma conditions have probably been correctly identified and quantitatively characterized in the model. The principal anomaly flagged so far relates to measurements of Te near the target, potentially pointing to a deficiency in our understanding of sheath physics in the tokamak environment.

Interpretive Modeling of DIII–D Edge Measurements Using the OEDGE Code
1. INTRODUCTION Interpretive code simulations play an essential role in divertor/edge physics, firstly, because the edge is intrinsically complicated: at least 3 states of matter are involved; the shape of the region is problematical: long, narrow, twisted, inaccessible; edge modeling must be at least 2D; etc. Meaningful interpretive exercises therefore require that a data set of edge measureme...
متن کاملAn experimental comparison of gross and net erosion of Mo in the DIII-D divertor
Experimental observation of net erosion of molybdenum being significantly reduced compared to gross erosion in the divertor of DIII-D is reported for well-controlled plasma conditions. For the first time, gross erosion rates were measured by both spectroscopic and non-spectroscopic methods. In one experiment a net erosion rate of 0.73 ± 0.03 nm/s was measured using ion beam analysis (IBA) of a ...

The parallel particle flow shows evidence of complex behavior such as reverse flow, i.e., flow away from...
متن کاملEX/9-3 Dust Studies in DIII-D and TEXTOR
Studies of naturally occurring and artificially introduced carbon dust are conducted in DIII-D and TEXTOR. In DIII-D, dust does not present operational concerns except immediately after entry vents. Energetic plasma disruptions produce significant amounts of dust. However, dust production by disruptions alone is insufficient to account for the estimated in-vessel dust inventory in DIII-D. Submi...
متن کاملDIII-D edge plasma simulations with UEDGE code including non-diffusive anomalous cross-field transport
Recently, both Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D tokamaks observed fast anomalous cross-field plasma transport in the SOL. These observations supported by theoretical studies have indicated that such transport is essentially non-diffusive and intermittent. We present the results of macroscopic plasma simulations with the UEDGE transport code including anomalous cross-field outward-directed convection fo...
